Design and Placemaking

Berkeley builds not just homes. We seek to create beautiful, successful places which are characterised by the quality of the design, public realm and access to jobs, transport and amenities.

The design of the new development is inspired by traditional vernacular architecture local to this area. The idea is to reinforce the best qualities of Southwater as a Sussex village.

The design and layout is based on the following principles:

  • Variety in the rooflines, house types, materials and character
  • Using a range of different architectural details
  • Architecture inspired by local villages and consistent with the Southwater Parish Design Statement
  • Minimal street furniture using natural materials
  • Traffic calming through design of streets
  • Existing trees and hedgerows integrated and enhanced within the streetscape
